Wilderness Area/Air Scenting Dogs
Wilderness Area/Air Scenting Dogs and their handlers will search a wilderness or rural area without a scent article to find a human in that area. Air scenting dogs are effective to cover large areas where the subject may likely be, but often no specific scent article is available and the direction of travel is unknown. This dog must deal well with animal distractions, deer, squirrels, etc., be able to work off-leash and have a reliable recall. Generally this is the easiest K9 SAR skill to teach and a dog will certify typically in about 18 months.
The dog searches often way out in front of the handler and covers large areas.
The person found is rewarding the dog with this tug toy - that's why the
dogs like to find strangers, because the ones they find in training are
so much fun!
